Meet our honorees: The Stanley and Joyce Black Family Foundation

STANLEY BLACK

Stanley Black, a seasoned real estate developer with over 60 years of experience, co-founded KB Development & Management where he spearheaded the creation of over sixty office, multi-family, and retail projects across Southern California. With a portfolio exceeding ten million square feet, his leadership as President of KB Management ensured the success of these endeavors, overseeing a team of nearly 200 individuals engaged in construction, operations, and management. In 1985, Stanley, alongside his son Jack, established Black Equities.

Beyond his achievements in real estate, Stanley's commitment to philanthropy shines brightly, leaving an indelible mark on the charitable landscape of Los Angeles. In 1989, Stanley and the late Joyce created their family foundation, The Stanley & Joyce Black Family Foundation, to carry out their mission of making the world a better place. Since then, Stanley has been honored by various civic organizations including the City of Hope, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Boy Scouts of America, and the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and actively supports local charitable causes such as Vista Del Mar Child and Family Services, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Holocaust Museum Los Angeles. His dedication extends globally as a member of the World Business Council, Chief Executives Organization, and a former Young Presidents Organization member.

Stanley Black's philanthropic legacy is a testament to his belief in the power of giving back, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and create lasting change in their communities.

JACK BLACK

Jack Black has over 30 years of experience in commercial real estate, beginning his career with KB Development and Management and being involved both in the development of office buildings and in property management and leasing. In 1989, Jack joined his father, Stanley Black, in opening Black Equities.

Outside of his corporate role, Jack is committed to giving back to the Los Angeles community. Jack is a Director of the Stanley and Joyce Black Family Foundation and supports many charitable organizations such as the University Kidney Research Organization, Temple of the Arts, and Project Angel Food.

Jack's devotion to philanthropy is mirrored in his personal life, where he finds joy in nurturing his family's spirit of giving. Alongside his wife, Joanie, and their daughter, Brittany, Jack instills the values of compassion and generosity, ensuring that their legacy of making a positive impact continues for generations to come.

JILL BLACK

Jill Black Zalben joined Black Equities in 2004. While actively involved in managing her family's real estate portfolio, she also serves as a Director of the Stanley and Joyce Black Family Foundation, channeling resources towards meaningful causes.

Her passion for philanthropy shines through her roles on the boards of prestigious organizations like Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors, The David Lynch Foundation, Temple of the Arts, Debbie Allen Dance Academy, UCLA Luskin School of Public Policy, and UCLA Health. Jill's dedication extends to supporting numerous Los Angeles-based initiatives such as Project Angel Food, where she actively contributes to breaking the cycle of chronic homelessness, poverty, and social inequalities.

Jill's impact goes beyond financial contributions. Her involvement with The People Concern, The Giving Spirit, Union Rescue Mission, and ADL showcases her commitment to effecting positive social change. She firmly believes in the power of mentorship, recognizing it as a transformative force in empowering young individuals to achieve personal growth and seize social and economic opportunities.

In addition to her hands-on involvement, Jill has engaged with Southern California Grantmakers and Council on Foundations, amplifying her impact within the philanthropic community. Holding a Bachelor's Degree in Public Communications from The American University in Washington, D.C., she combines her expertise with her passion for social change.

Jill is a proud mother of two children, Zach and Torie, who inspire her dedication to building a better world for future generations.

ZACH ZALBEN

Zach Zalben, a Los Angeles native, is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Urban Studies. Much of his spare time is spent with various organizations, including YPO. He is on the board of The Stanley & Joyce Black Family Foundation, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces Los Angeles Chapter, Beverly Hills Temple of the Arts and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

Today, Zach is the CEO of Black Equities and oversees its day-to-day operations as well as acquisitions & dispositions, development, redevelopment, financing and more. He spent his high school summers as an intern then continued part time throughout college. Black Equities owns over 12 million square feet of industrial & retail real estate as well as over 2,000 apartment units, with a heavy concentration in southern California. The company is actively entitling, building and rehabbing senior living facilities, warehouses, shopping centers,  quick service restaurants, and apartments.
